The Unitarian Fellowship of Fredericton believes everyone should have access to the benefits of ceremonies marking important milestones in their lives. Since freedom is a basic principle underlying the beliefs and practices of Unitarians, we encourage the creation of ceremonies that will be as meaningful as possible to the individual or individuals involved.
Our Lay Chaplains, Jenn Carpenter-Gleim and Decima Mitchell, perform Rites of Passage for the general public in the Fredericton area. A Lay Chaplain is not a minister of religion, but an active member of our congregation who is appointed and trained to perform rites of passage. Jenn Carpenter-Gleim was registered by the Province of New Brunswick to solemnize weddings in May of 2019 and Decima Mitchell in April of 2022. They are both members of the Canadian Unitarian Universalist Lay Chaplains Association.
We offer our services to everyone including to those who have not had a spiritual community or no longer have one.

How to become a UFF Lay Chaplain
The CUC has granted the Unitarian Fellowship of Fredericton three Lay Chaplaincy positions. A candidate must be a member in good standing of the UFF for a minimum of one year. Each candidate submits an application and is interviewed by a selection committee, consisting of the Lay Chaplaincy Committee Chair and invited members of the Congregation. The successful candidate is then required to submit an application to the CUC. Upon approval, the LC Candidate completes the CUC’s Lay Chaplaincy Self Study Guide and the Lay Chaplaincy Quiz. There is an additional requirement of on-line training through the CUC.
After being vetted by the Selection Committee, the candidate must be approved by the Congregation at Large. Each Lay Chaplain must be reaffirmed in the position by the Congregation at each AGM.
