Handfasting is popular with people who would like to add this ancient ritual to a traditional wedding ceremony. It is Celtic in origin, going back thousands of years. During this ritual, the hands of the couple are tied together, to symbolize the joining of two lives. This ritual is the origin of the phrase, “tying the knot”. Typically, cords or ribbons are tied by the officiant, but the couple may choose to have a family member or friend tie the cord. It is performed at one of two types of ceremonies, either a wedding or a betrothal. The couple supplies the cord or ribbon for the handfasting.
